Wreck
Wednesday I was behind a late model RG when a driver pulled out in front of him. He tried to swerve but there was no time or distance to do so. He got hurt pretty bad but survived so far. After seeing this first hand with him and the bike wrecked on the ground I said to myself I am selling my bike. I got out for a ride tonight and I felt comfortable and felt great to be riding. Not sure what I am going to do now.

Makes you think. I lost a friend on a motorcycle to someone running a red light in a van, he was on his way to work and left behind 3 teenage daughters and his wife. That still affects me but I still ride. What works for me is to understand each accident I hear about, what were the circumstances and if it was completely unavoidable I go to the flight of stairs scenario. How many people die falling down the stairs every year? 12,000 / year in the US and a million injuries but I still use the stairs.
In my friend's case he didn't look both ways before crossing the road, situational awareness, its that simple. I've avoided being hit in a car, my bike and my truck just by doing that simple check and I do it twice each way. So in my mind my friends death could've been avoided despite the red light runner. I find that most are avoidable if the rider is paying attention, the rider in a visible position approaching an intersection, some people weave as they approach an intersection to catch the drivers attention - I've done it. I also slow down a bit and im ready on the brakes when approaching an intersection. And for those that just cant be avoided Im more likely to die falling down the stairs.

I hit a deer in my car about a year ago. That was eye opening, my car was totaled, it made me think the same way you are after that '...what if I was on my bike...?' kept going through my mind. I thought about it a lot during all of last winter, by the time riding season came around in April I was better with it, I still ride really pretty cautious but then, I always did/do. Some things scare us and open our eyes when we realize how easy **** can happen and change our lives forever, it'll be up to you how you handle this.
