I hate that they don't link to easily accessible data in these articles.
Here is the actual data from HD, in their July 24 quarterly report. Check out slide 17. https://s201.q4cdn.com/697889289/fil...2524-FINAL.pdf

For the last 10yrs the average age was 45. I bought my first Harley at 60 but I identify as a 35 year old, so that could bring their numbers down a bit.

Just did quick savings calculator 40 years at 3% would be 15k. Not sure real accurate, but intersting.

Harleys have gotten expensive cause a lot of us are driving dressers now
I bought my first 'new' HD in 1984 - It was a dealers bike, still on MSO. It was an 83 WG and I still have it. The price was 3300.00 - I paid 1000.00 cash, a Maico 490 and a Yamaha Seca 750. In comparison, I bought a Mustang SVO brand new for 11000.00, had a payment of 300 a month and lived at home... Joys of being a college grad in 1984...

MSRP on a new 1985 FXRS was $8400 or thereabouts. I paid $7400. That was the dealer's asking price. I “negotiated” and got another $50 off.

according to this

Inflation Calculator | Find US Dollar's Value From 1913-2024 (usinflationcalculator.com)

that same bike @ $7400 would cost $21,600

Factory new Harley's have always been expensive...then and now

The average age of 45 is based on the 70 per cent of HD buyers using finance. The other 30 percent are probably aged 65-plus, paying cash to spend thier kids' inheritance while they still can. That could lift the average to over 60 years old.

I've told the same, there were always expensive. But with respect to inflation are they? Look at the price of a cruiser now.

I thought so too. That’s why I couldn’t afford one till I hit a fat bonus one year after signing a million dollar account forty years ago.
