Dealer Inventory

[QUOTE=Sandcrab;21788817]I come with an OTD door price by figuring out what they have into the bike, add $1k and taxes...May not be close to what they pay, but it also isn't anywhere close to MSRP either.

So what is exactly the true cost of a bike? I offered $37K OTD, he laughed and said they were already losing money...Wrote my name and number on the back of his card and said give me a call if you change your mind, just dont wait too long as I am looking at a few other bikes...He called like 4 days later and said ok...Told him sorry, found a bike already.

Over stocked dealers
I've seen the same thing in Upstate NY. If HD is making 50% annual income from loans on new bikes, and inventory is swelling, a bubble shall burst. Until the entire business model of HD changes, to making bikes without politics, not only will a divided clientele continie, but more hard working Americans will become unemployed. This year, HD needed to sell close to 1,000 touring bikes just to cover zeitz's salary and compensation. Based on a $30,000 bike. That figure is mind blowing.

Local dealer is Redstone HD. Parent company owns 8 dealerships. If you do inventory search on their web, at this moment they show 635 new motorcycles for sale, 306 pre-owned, across the 8. Modify search to just Redstone, it's 138 new / 61 used. And I'm sure more stuff arrives daily. I'm sure the owners are mopping sweat looking that spreadsheet over.
There's 129 days left in the year. Is that their target, or new release day? If year end, do the math. 5 new bikes a day, 7 days a week, is a lot of new motorcycles to sell. Of course they can ship them around from stagnant to hot locations. Sounds do-able, but they're going to have to hustle, and deal.

That makes him equal to the salesperson he was dealing with. I don't see a problem here.
Of course you're seeing it from the perspective of your old occupation. Once a salesman, always a salesman apparently.

In Q2 2022 Harley-Davidson listed twenty two thousand units in inventory across all dealers. In Q2 2024 that number has ballooned to sixty eight thousand. This is almost as bad as it was in Q2 2019 when Zeist announced Harley would make considerable effort to reduce inventory numbers to allow Harley to control prices.
Think about it, sixty eight thousand units in circulation when Harley is only expected to sell around one hundred sixty thousand motorcycles world wide.
