Replace my helmet? Just because it's been 5 years? I don't think so, Will Robinson! If fiberglass degrades that badly, we'd all need to replace tubs, shower stalls, car parts, ad nausea every 5 years too. What a friggin' crock.
Here's what I think of the whole 'Oh no and woes is we! It's been five and a half years and I didn't change my helmet! I'm sure now that the world will end and that while riding today it will disintegrate and cause me to wreck and bust my head open and die thus showing I needed to replace it at five years!!! Ohy why did I wait! <wail><moan><sob><whimper>' thing...

If I wear it a lot, 5 years at the most. My Bell Qualifier is 3 years old and I don't want to run it any longer than about 5 years. It's starting to show it's age. My dirt helmets have lasted a lot longer. In my previous HJC dirt bike helmet, the foam started separating from the shell at about 10 years.
I think the difference is, my street helmet gets used year-round, and the rides are more frequent and longer. Dirt helmet is used less frequently and rides usually aren't as long.

I've seen a lot of helmets fall off the motorcycle seat to a concrete / asphalt surface in various parking lots over the years. And I've always been told that if the helmet sustains an impact it should be inspected and replaced as needed. That said, we are also warned about not drinking and driving and a lot of other things we most everyday. Especially at rallys.

I have a very hard time finding helmets that fit. I have a cheap Rodia half helmet I bought because it had all the features I wanted. Snap on “bill” to shade my nose that has had several surgeries due to carcinomas from too much sun, vents in the front and back for these hot/humid NC summers, and fits perfect. It was five years old when it was shipped to me new. And I’ve been wearing it three years. So is it 8 years old, or 3?
I really wanted a Super Seer police half helmet for this fall riding season, but you have to custom order for the most part, and they are slammed with orders from the Chicago PD in the run up to this year’s DNC.

I’ve never heard of Super Seer helmets before, but they look pretty cool. Hey, they’re made in the U.S.A! I never thought I would see an American made helmet again.

If you see a cop in a half helmet, it’s a Super Seer. They been making them for 50 years. Riot helmets too.
