"Out of stock?" Why didn't you tell me BEFORE I bought it?

A minor rant because I'm feeling cranky this morning: I bought some new mirrors from Cycle Mirrors the other day. I paid extra for them to be shipped faster. They charged me and emailed me the receipt.
A little later in the day, I got this email:"Thank you for your recent order ...Unfortunately, the part you have ordered is currently on backorder.
At this time the expect availability date is the end of August, 2024. Currently you are 2nd in line for this item when it becomes available again."
They did give me the chance to cancel and get a refund, but in my opinion, they should tell the customer it's not in stock BEFORE he buys it. I think it's seedy and greedy to accept your money when they know they don't have it in stock.
I let them know how I felt about it. Didn't seem to matter much.

Below should be a red flag for this company. Lifted from their website:
Order Cancellation Fee
An order for the purchase of Product(s) is considered "placed" once the Buyer has submitted the order, credit card or PayPal information is provided, and the card or PayPal account is charged for the Products. Any termination of the order after such time is considered a cancelled order, whether or not Product has shipped and is subject to $5.95 Cancellation Fee.

I tend to try to stick with Dirk, JP, Cycle Gear/Revzilla, etc who let you know when ordering if it is in stock or not.

A lot of these "online retailers" are as TwiXted mentioned. You order from them, then they place the order with some distributor, who may or may not have it in stock.

Prior to the scamdemic, many of these online only retailers were in a price war. A few items I know I paid below the distributor cost. I saved a few shekels then shopping around. And there were shopping tools online to find the low cost sellers.

I had to wait 3 months before I could purchase bag bars for my 2024 Road Glide. I've owned 4 Harley baggers in the past and everyone I bought had bars on them as they were sitting on the showroom floor. I felt very uncomfortable riding without them. I put the word out to 4 different Dealers and one called me back 2 months later and said he had received a shipment of bars give me your credit card number and I will put your name on the box. I drove sixty miles to pick them up and I put them on the same day.
