I had a tough time adjusting to hearing aids for the same reasons you describe. My audiologist kept saying if I stick with it it will get better. It's been about three months now and I can say that she was right.
your brain will eventually adjust so that now I barley notice the sounds that were very annoying and the tinnitus has also subsided quite a bit.

Listening to the TC96B with the hearing aids, while riding, was a whole new experience of sounds and noise that had me freaking out for a bit.
