Personally, I believe the lower viscocity oils are recommended by the manufacturer to help reduce viscous friction and improve fuel economy even if it is minimal. It doesn't mean the low viscocity oils are bad, they just work better under some circumstances than others.

For detergents in the oil, as far as I know all newer (EVO and later) have magnents on the drain plugs to help catch metal fragments. But that is not what detergents are designed for anyway. As pointed out above, if you have larger pieces of metal in the oil or drain plug of the engine, trans or primary you have problems no oil will correct.

Always defer to the manufacture's recommendations/requirements. That's it. I surely don't know as much as the engineers that designed these drivetrains. I know a bit about oil and can share technical detail about it, why one would be choice above another, but I will defer to the OEM for specific recommendations.

I would not use a hypoid 90W in my however. If someone else wants to, that's fine with me.

On why Harley stopped saying use SYN3 as first choice in owners manuals was my opinion. I assumed they had a reason. They sure are not going to tell you they made a mistake.

But once it started say use SYN 3, sure saw a lot of issues here on the FORUM on primary and transmission issues. That's why I said what I did.

Little help on that W number. So your saying that's not determined by seeing at different temperatures how fast the fluid drips thru a certain size hole?

And don't use those crazy formulas that mean nothing unless you are an oil engineer. What is that W mean in simple terms.

Think for now on in oil threads, I will stick to no more then saying 'Formula + works great year round for me since 2004.'

Maybe then, I won't get the from North and Dan..

Me neither. Sounds painful and is probably illegal in some jurisdictions.

English skills - rarer these days than common sense.

As to a forum being an indicator of warranty problems is not only a stretch but ludicrous. Hilarious actually.

And one last bit of my .02, how come folks on a motorcycle forum think they know more than Harley Davidson? Claiming they know engineers or are engineers that know more than Harley Davidson engineers. It’s like some believe Willie G blesses the manufacturing aspect when he’s been key to some design/aesthetic changes, but even then forum posters know more than he does as to the why’s of all Harley’s.

Pure comedy yet not as it’s beaten like a dead horse. Personally I have never met anyone with a majority of the “problems” reported on this or any forum. Most I know who maintain their Harley per the manufacturer’s recommendation whether by Harley, an independent or themselves have smooth running bikes. So much great information is found but assessments of why Harley is a **** company by forum armchair mechanics/engineers really waters down the good information. Ride On! Cheers!
Hey, I resemble that remark. And I agree.

I dont know whats going on here, but I swapped to Forumula+ in my primary and transmission and it helped with getting neutral more easily.
I'll keep using it over the amsoil primary, or the syn3 that was in my bike when I bought it.

My Twin Cams & M8s, had the best clutch performance and shifting with Formula+ in the primary and BelRay in the tranny.
