Daggone deer are a major hazard that take out a lot of riders. I had an old friend whose wife got killed in a deer strike just like yours.
Time and time again I've seen animals wait for a car (or bike) to be all but upon them when they decide to dart out into the road. I killed a rabbit in the car two weeks ago. Dark out, no other traffic at all, it could have waited 2 seconds but nooooo.
I hope you get better real soon. I always admired your blue Low Rider.

Ouch, Heal up quickly!
Been there, done that. The deer I hit looked at me like "what the hell was that for?" and ran off. A few cracked ribs, fractured a bone in my right foot and it sometimes clicks when I walk to remind me of the fun. I too was on my way into work in the early morning. No witnesses but the ambo was there in about 2 minutes. My Road King was totaled but the insurance company let me keep it, gave me a nice check and no "salvage" title so I customized the heck out of it.
