Default Motorcycle Use of HOV Lanes

Can motorcycles use the High Occupancy Vehicle/HOV lanes?

I didn't know the answer to this and assumed not since they are not marked, indicating motorcycles are allowed. I've subsequently learned that they can, at least Federal Interstate Highways, after doing a little research of the US Code (i.e., the laws of our land!).

You can read the full article on my blog here:

Please share your experiences here on this forum, especially if you've ever received a moving violation and if you were able to overturn it/fight it. (Apparently, it can be overturned!)

Thanks!

I always use the HOV lanes on the bike. It is legal here as long as you don't cross the double yellow. I always am extra cautious where cars get in and out as that is the most likeley place for an accident happen in my opinion.

It's legal here in Cal. Just don't get too comfy. Alot of the cages don't respect the double-double.

Legal here in TX as well. It is a huge time saver in rush hour traffic, but as previous posters have stated, seems to be a great place for a wreck. Lot of people in a hurry in the HOV lane. Just make sure that you are alert.

Yes They are legal here in VA. It's nice here because we have seperate lanes with on and off exits. So once you're on your on.

I believe that Federal legislation was passed that makes the use of all HOV lanes legal in all 50 states. The comment about using caution was right-on. I've had more than one idiot dart into the lane without looking -- typically a single-occupancy cheat looking to gain a few spaces. The scariest moments on the bike, to me, are riding in the HOV lane with the other lanes all stopped dead, especially in the rain.

In Arizona, HOV lanes can be used by;

- vehicles with two or more passengers; Pregnant women, blowup dolls, and pets don't count as two passengers.

- motorcycles

- alternative fuel vehicles

- Hybrid vehicles; i.e. Toyota Prius

- Metro buses

Restricted hours are 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. All other times, all vehicles can use the HOV lanes

Fines for using the HOV lanes if you don't meet the criteraduring restricted hourscan start around $350.

It's legal in GA and the HOVs here have signs specifically authorizing motorcycles.

It's also something like 4-5 points on your license too. I think 6 is the level where you get your license suspended here.

HOV lanes are bullshit and a waste of space. The reason we have them is sop the Feds can control the highway speeds.
