I am surprised that your letter didnt void the warranty. the other day i walked past my scoot and that almost voided the warranty. i am sick and tire of the least little thing supposedly voiding my warranty. just a little rant. i am calm now. i have harnessed my chi.

As many of you are aware, the HOG magizine Enthusiast had the following reply in the letters to the editor.

"SYN3 is the only synthetic motor oil that does not impact your 24-month, unlimited-mile factory warranty. And Switching to SYN3 is easy....................."

This is a carefully worded reply that will (purposely) leave the average reader with the impression that the only synthetic oil they can use with out voiding the warranty is SYN3. It is very misleading. I wrote to the Enthusiast and received the following reply @ 36 hours after I sent it. (Cut~n~paste)

My e-mail to them:

This myth is continually spread by the Harley-Davidson Motor Company and it's dealerships. Although your statement doesn't say that only HD MoCo products must be used, it is very misleading. Most people will read it as such.

I feel that you should define that answer in the next issue and plainly state that any motor oil meeting or exceeding specs will not void any warrenty. The Magnuson-Moss Act is pretty clear about that and does not in any way shape or form exempt Harley Davidson motorcycles.

And the reply.

Thank you for your submission to Enthusiast. Harley-Davidson Motor Company and our magazine would not be what they are today without the interest, enthusiasm, and support of people like you.

We always enjoy hearing from fellow Harley-Davidson enthusiasts. All submissions are filed and considered for publication for at least one year (4 issues).

Thank you again for your submission to Enthusiast and your interest in and support of Harley-Davidson.

Ride Safe,

The Editors

Enthusiast Magazine

Wonder if they ever will address my letter to them! If they do you can bet it will be a misleading tap dance around the issue for that I am sure.

WTF kind of answer was that. seems to me that your letter never left the restroom

Looks like someone is getting good wear out of that outfit!

As you probably know, I've been outta warranty for a while. I also am very interested in this chain of events and will be watching closely. This topic has also got me interested in working on an article reviewing oils and filters.

Heaven forbid if Harley finds out you aren't using their "Certified Air", the only air guaranteed not to void your warranty.

I didn't think you were the **** type! Ya gonna send off some fresh quarts of the typical oils we muttersickle riders use and have 'em analyzed? And there's some dude I found through theBITOG site who made a rig to test filters for flow, bypass pressure, etc.

Wonder if Blackstone Labs would analyze the oil gratis for mention in your rag?

Here's my list of possible oils: HD Syn-3, HD-360 20w-50, Mobil 1 silver cap 15w-50, Mobil 1 V-Twin 20w-50, Amsoil 20w-50, Castrol SynTec 20w-50, Castrol GTX 20w-50, Valvoline 20w-50, Havoline 20w-50, Royal Purple 20w-50, Redline 20w-50.

Filters: Stock HD type, Wix, NAPA, Purolator, AC Delco, Fram, Amsoil

Ain't I bein' helpful?
