Default New rider Insurance??

I`m 57 never owned a bike -have my learners permit for now -so I call my Allstate agent( have my car,Suv and Apt renters ins with them

they want $1200 a yr for full coverage-- on an 08 Heritage classic

only ticket I`ve had was in 1974 for speeding in my VW on I64-tail end of traffic..yea they got my butt--

Is that about right for a new rider or should I shop around.

Thanks
mike

also umbrela policy was extra $184 a yr -which I think is like a gap policy..

An umbrella policy picks up where your auto liability ends. Usually, you must have limits of 250/500, and 500K on your homeowners policy.
As for the cost, I suspect it's higher because you only have a permit. Combine that with no riding experience, and your cost will be higher.
You can lower it some by taking the MSF course. Also, some companies will give you a discount for AARP or HOG membership.

That sounds REALLY high. I think I pay around $300 per year with Farmers.

geico or progressive. Do it online. When asked online how long you've operated a motorcycle, go back to when you were sixteen and rode that dirtbike on the road occasionally. Subtract current age from 16 and thats how long you've been riding on the street. This cant be checked or verified. LIE!!!! You'll get a quote of around 400 bucks probly.

Since you are a geezer, you can probably get the best deal from Foremost County Insurance offered through AARP. We have three bikes insured with them and the total is about $650 a year. The best thing to do as was mentioned is to take the MSF course as you'll get additional discounts.

Allstate had the best deal for me. About $100 a year but I didn't get full coverage because I paid cash for my bike. Policy covers pasenger and towing up to $50. I also had the MSF safety card. Geico and a couple others would not give a discount for the safety card.

Also I was a new rider with zero experiance except for the MSF class.

Wow, that is high. My full coverage with Progressive is 300+ a year and I got that without shopping around. I was planning on renting a bike and not buying a bike that day I walked into the dealer. So shop around and you should be able to get a much better deal than $1200.

Same here--a new rider with no previous experience, on a 96 cu. in. engine--about $350/year. As others have mentioned (and as you surely know), it all depends on driving history and amount of coverage (if your bike is financed, there are minimums that apply), but also the model, year, and size of your bike. Oh yeah, my coverage is with State Farm. They give pretty nice discounts if you have more than one "line" with them.
