If mine went through customs, they’d probably impound it.

I suppose a good rule of thumb is if you have to tell someone its custom, it isn't custom.

Lets first break down what the term "Custom" entails which includes but is not limited to the strong likelihood of...
  1. Poor quality aftermarket parts
  2. Low grade coatings (i.e. rapidly bubbling chrome, fading anodized finishes and crappy powder coating)
  3. Zero spare parts availability
  4. Miles upon mile of discomfort (due to...)
  5. Poorly thought out ergonomics purposefully compromised in the name of abstract styling (as executed while higher than Tommy Chong) and always asking questions like...
  6. What were those paint codes again?
  7. Where can I find the torque values for those spiked cap nuts?
  8. How come my garage always smells like raw gas?
  9. Why does that fuse link keep blowing?
  10. I know it looks cool but isn't it dangerous to run an exposed primary?
yep...^^THAT's^^..."custom"

I know one of mine is a true custom because it says so on the side covers.

in the absolute, most stringent definition, anything you do to a stock bike makes it a 'custom'. however, real world application is much different.

i was always (slightly) embarrassed to tell anyone i had a 'sportster custom' and then a 'road king custom', followed by 'road glide custom', because of that very reason. sure, i added some different things, and changed things up a little on them (who doesn't?), but by no means would i consider them 'custom builds'.

i get a kick of the folks that call their bike a 'custom build', when all they've done is add some gee gaws, and maybe changed the seat and handlebars...

'Custom' is a term that will never be defined to the agreement of all. It's one of those things that you know when you see it, but someone else sees it differently.
