Default Be careful, this heat is a killer.

A group of about twenty of us met for a ride yesterday morn at the Harley shop as we do about once a month.By ten o'clock it was like riding in a blast furnace, never a cooler pocket of air. Before the day was over one guy passed out, crashed into a bridge abutmet and another was so sick and weak he had to leave his bike and come back later with one of his buddies to get his bike home.

The sweep said the guy who hit the bridge slumped forward a little bit and just rode into the bridge like he knew what he was doing. Said he thought the guy was dead he was so tore up,but he was consious enough to make sure somebody was gonna take care of his bike.. Lifeflight flew him back to Mobile and he's in guarded condition. He hasa brokenleg and a torn up knee and we don't know what other injuries but is probably gonna be ok. Hospital didn't know he passed out til hours later, they just thought he was in a wreck,so they still got to make sure the heat was what caused him to pass out.

Be safe.

Good Luck

Tom

lot of breaks for water and air conditioning is the best suggestion. or just wait till is cooler out. i love to ride but not in this heat though

lots of water breaks is the key to hot weather. by the time you realize something is wrong it is too late. [/align]

It's hot here in Kansas too, We've had a ton of rain this spring and now the 100 degree plus heat is making it nasty. Ya find yourself looking for green stuff on both sides of the road cause if you pass a plowed field or a yellow wheat field it's like a blow torch. Our prayers go out for your friend. Hope he heals up OK

Been hot, and getting hotter. Ambient temps yesterday were in the 98 degree range. Today, they are predicting 100+ across the state. Factor in some humidity, and you are looking at heat indexes of 110+.

Sorry to hear about your friend. Hope he comes out okay!!

We went riding on Sunday put about 450 miles on the scoots,we stopped about every hour for water, fuel, smokes and what ever. You had to stop that frequently just to replenish the water loss in your body the temps were in the low 100's and the heat index was 110.We had one of the guys started to feel a little under the weather in Austin,Tx. but we took a long break there, pumped him full of Gatorade and he felt much better. We caught a little spot of rain and boy did it feel soooo good.

I hope your pal is OK... The heat can be rough... Its always 105+ here in the Palm Springs area this time of year. I have a Cool Sac thatI put on the luggage rack and load it with ice and drinks... water, gatorade, propels and some snacks too.. I try to fit 2 drinks per person... so whenever we stop we have something... Can't stress enough how much it helps, and just havin' it there lends to peace of mind... Even though we generally get out of the valley as fast as we can!!

Sorry to hear what happened to you guys. We had a scare or two as well here in Missouri during a group ride I was with yesterday. One small town temp gauge said 105 and the humidity was unreal. One of our groupheaded back after about 75 mileswith his wife who was really feeling the heat. Took a very long break, in the AC, lots of water waiting for her recover. Another 50 +/- miles we stopped at a quick trip to take a break and a guy not part of our group rides up,walks into the quick trip and hits the ground. He said he had been riding for about 2 hrs. This was another very long break as we hung out making sure this guy was okay. To this point we have gone less than 150 miles and had two very lengthy stops in air conditioned places. Next stop was another long break (hour plus) in AC for lunch, lots of water. Then after lunch heading back, we had gone about 50 miles when one of our guys dashes over to the shoulder, stops his bike and passed out before getting off the bike. The guard rail ended up breaking the bikes fall and held it up somewhat with him sitting on it out cold.Amazing he got stopped in time. As a group we took what we though was every precaution possible shy of not going at all. We made tons of stops and drank tons of fluids, talked about it, knew it was happening around us but it was so hot that those folks thatdon't handle the heatwell were just overwhelmed.

Sorry to hear about your friend. Here in Arizona we're pretty much accustomed to riding inhot weather. The trick is to keep hydrated. Drink plenty of water. If you ain't peeing you ain't drinking enough!!
