The same as TM and Yamaha on the off road race bikes, uses that area as an air box for more down draft and cleaner air. Then you add tank under the seat for lower center of gravity. The left side of the bike looks great and with some of those bits from the German people it cleans up nicely instead of the plain solid color plastic. The right side covers need something like that also. Then get rid of that exhaust and it is a good looking bike. For the target market they need to drop 3k off the price.

Harley engines never did until the Evo came out. The left side on the new engine isn't pretty thats for sure.

I'm a fan. But I'm kind of biased when it comes to Nightsters...
Would I replace mine with this new one? No. No matter what you do, that new motor will never have the sound or character of the Sportster EVO motor. I'm sure the new motor is a likely a good one and the new bike appears to have good/superior power and weight numbers. I suspect the suspension is vastly improved and you have all the new safety/electronics enhancements etc., etc. Nevertheless, it may not seem like a "Harley" to many - to include myself. Pricewise it's seems a touch pricey and it will have to compete on "contemporary" turf with other manufacture's offerings.
That said, I give HD props on the looks of this new one - you can still see a lot of the original in it. I'd still give my original the nod for looks though. It's also good to see the "Nightster" lineage living on. I was perplexed when they had retired it.
As to the bobbed rear fender... I don't know why some have problems with it. It's a Nightster. What do you expect? Personally I'm a fan of it - obviously. I like it on the original and the new. They've sold plenty - so many other must like it too. Still selling Irons with the bobbed tail.
All said... I like it overall.
