Crate! On average more reliable! Taking a rock solid factory engine and building it up is always a risk.

 

What year bike we talking?

 

If you are capable of building a blue printed engine. With the knowledge to fit and choose between items that suit your application (cams, heads etc.) then you wouldn't be asking the question. If you know of an excellent quality builder, then you will receive a great engine. Just remember knowledge is worth dollars. Will your crate engine be inferior to your hand-built engine, wear quicker be slower probably not. If your requirements are specific, then a good engine builder is the way to go.
