Maybe you shoulda thought about what bike to buy instead of worrying about your mate??Harleys dont go fast(without spending heaps of money)and dont go around corners well, but I can still think of lotsa good reasons to own one!!If you just have to win the race though, lean accross and hit his kill switch as you take off! Many ways to win arace.

Sportbikes are a little harder to get of the line without raising the front wheel. If your buddy gets off the line without flipping it over, then he'll smoke your butt. I saw a 600cc sportbike (Suzuki GSXR 600) smoke a V-Max. on 1/4 mile. It was a good race though. Something like 11.25 sec in 1/4 mile if I remember correctly. I think it would depend of the rider experience, but still think about 95% positive) he'll take you. In fact, his bike would give a V-Rod a run for t's money. Wanna race, buy a bike made for it, don't worry about trying to prove something to your buddy. I've had friends who have bought sportbikes too, and one thing I'll let you know, is eventually (unless you guys were willing to die for one another), one or the other of you guys will buy the same kind of bike as the other, of your friendship is going to fade into mere acquaintances. Is this your first HD? If so, chances are even better that it'll happen. This was my first, and folks I used to ride with (on the metric side) twice every weekend, don't even speak to me anymore. Not sure if it was me (if so, screw 'em) or the fact I bought a HD, but something changed almost immediately. Out of about 30 "friends" I used to ride with, only 2 still ride with me, and one of them bought a 2002 Indian Scout to supplement his VTX, so he's already went American. In fact, the only time he rides his "X" is when the wives come with us, which is maybe twice a year anymore. They're both true brothers to me and I to them.

I'll try to talk him into that. He's not so keen about it though. Says his bike has too short wheelbase, so he can't get on it hard without lifting the front wheel. No such problem for me though.

Back to the original question:
I'm beginning to get the picture, but we will still meet after work tonight and test the bikes. Could be fun no matter what the outcome is. I'll get back with a report later...

Any of you guys ever go the All Harley Drags?
Straight line lessons for those grinders can be done, harder with the counterbalance engines however.
SiLlY has seen a street legal FXDX that is faster than the new R6's. (standing start 1/4 mile.)
It will make any of the bros proud to watch.

I can't believe you even thought you had a chance... You can only do him off the mark , once that R6 hit's 6000rpm's it will be all over.

There won't be any friendship issues in this case. We go back a long time, and he's not jealous of my Harley. Cruisers are not for him, and sportbikes are not for me. Riding together is not that important to either of us, but we do it occasionally. We can ride at a pace that both of us is happy with.

Either way, have fun racing your buddy. Even if you lose, it'll be fun.
