The Electra Glide

In 2021, Harley Davidson still sells a model named after a 50+ year old advancement in motorcycle technology. An advancement that long ago became universal.
No other manufacturer would do that. No other manufacturer would dare.
Yet the Electra Glide name continues, proudly rolling into the future.
How can you not love that?

First big twin Harley was a brand new 1999 Electra Glide Standard. I was in my early thirties and a bit of a rebel for buying an "Old Man's Bike" at the time but I loved the all day touring comfort and the bonus of having saddle bags to carry my groceries. Traded that motorcycle in for a Fatboy a few years later. That was a mistake.
Bought another Electra Glide in 2008. Loved that bike. After putting a lot of miles on that motorcycle, traded it in on a nearly new 2013 Road King. Liked the Road King but it just couldn't match the Electra Glide for long distance comfort and protection from the elements.
In 2018, the Road King got traded in on a brand new Ultra Limited (Electra Glide with a few more bells and whistles). I will be keeping my present ride for a few more years but when it comes time for replacement, I will stick with the Electra Glide platform. Love the comfort, love the batwing fairing, love the ride and handling. The Electra Glide is truly the Peterbilt 359 of motorcycles.

The point isn't the longevity of the name.
The point is the longevity if a name based on a now common feature.
Imagine if Dodge had named a car the "Roll up Window Special" in 1917, and still kept the name decades after every other manufacturer adopted the feature.
That's what I mean.

Omaha, I get it. I don’t think some people know how the Electra-Glide Got its name. It was the electric starter.
The Corvette and Mustang Are not novel ideas. They took out the name Electra-Glide for a few years. I have an Ultra-limited which can be called an Electra-Glide even though the Moco dropped it but now its name is back. Love my ride!

Hydraulic suspension aside - be it front, rear or both, with or without an electric starter motor - we have lost out way. Knowing Old School **** is not a prerequisite to owning a Harley but it does enrichen the experience.
