That's the going rate typically. $500 is a lot of money but the first service includes a lot of checks. Personally, I'd go down the list of everything that needs to be checked in the service manual myself and know it was done the right way. That's going to save you money and make you more familiar with the workings of the machine.
The knowledge of doing it yourself is priceless if you're planning on keeping it for many years. If you're the type that gets a new bike every year or two, let the dealer do it and don't bother.

I typically let the dealer perform the 1K service. Between buying the bike and the 5K service, I’ve ordered and received the service manual. From then on I do all the service myself. My most recent 1K service took two hours and cost $345 with oil filter and synthetic oil in all three holes.

The OP asked if it was worth it, didn`t say he couldn`t afford it
The answer probably depends on if the dealer / tech is thorough and actually does ALL the prescribed checks

Plus it was rather condescending. I am too lazy. I paid my Indy $150 to service all 3 holes with Lucas synthetic.
