HD service guy says no to Mobil 1
I took my 07 Springer Classic in to my local dealer today to have the battery box recall done. I'm getting close to my 1000 mile service so I wanted to ask a question. You see, I've read all the posts on here about what's the best oil, and I know its almost a tie between Mobil 1 V-Twin and Amsoil. So I asked if they had a problem with me supplying my own oil for the 1K service. "No problem bud. What kind are you gonna use?" I say Mobil 1 V-Twin. "Oh no, that's the one synthetic oil Harley says that you CAN'T use." He went on to explain something about the viscosity being to low or too high, I can't remember, and the bottom end of the motor not getting the right protection. I'm paraphrasing here, but it sounded like he knew what he was talking about. He finished by saying, "We'll put it in if you want, but if something goes wrong with the engine, you're on your own." By the way, he said Amsoil wasOK to use. Anyway, I was shocked after reading all the great things on here about Mobil 1.
Have you guys ever heard this before? What do you think, is my service guy full of crap?

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that your dealer is full of crap. I put Mobil V-twin in at the 1000 mile point and haven't had a bit of trouble. Comming up on the 5000 mile service and plan on using it again.

Mobil1 VTwin should be OK (it is on all my other rides), but Mobil1 (non-VTwin) is a no-no. The friction modifiers (for car motors) will cause hydraulic clutches to slip.

Unless HD has done testing on that oil and has found it causes specific main bearing failure by using it , the dealer cannot void your warrany. I can't believe they keep trying to pull this crap. Some say syn is too slippery. Funny, my clutch don't seem to slip any more than the factory oil it came with.

Donny Petersen writes for AIM (hope I spelled his name correctly) &he is probably one of the world best Harley mechanics. He confirmed something that took me years to discover & that is the fact that there is no better oil then Mobil#1 or Amsoil. I'd be a bit cautious with some backyard Harley wrench making such statements because he most likely is wrong about a few other things. Could be that the guy was trying to impress you with something he knew you had never heared before. In any event both are excellent oils & can't lose either way. but read the item & form your own opinion http://www.pecuniary.com/pdf/AmerIronPt1.pdf
