My 34T Pulley Experience
#21
UPDATE: My 34T pulley experience (now on a Softail)!
Figured this is as good a place as any to bring this up, so ....
I liked the 34T "sprocket" on my RKC so much that I had considered having one put on my Softail Springer. There was a difference though. Whereas the Road King's gearing was so low that I would be shifting before I made it across the crosswalk as I was entering an intersection, the Springer would make it well into the intersection before needing to shift. I double-checked the tooth count on both bikes and the manual said they were the same.
I was okay with that, except that I was always looking for another gear when I was already in 5th gear. It was like first gear in the Springer was like the Road King was AFTER the 34T sprocket was installed but fifth gear was like the Road King BEFORE the 34T sprocket was installed. Yet, the math worked out the same!
I was a bit hesitant to have the 34T sprocket installed because I didn't want to have a first gear that was too high to be reasonable. After some thought, I ordered the Andrews sprocket and scheduled a time with my indy to do the swap. I went with the Andrews piece because it is steel and I've heard of the aluminum ones wearing down quickly. This IS Florida, the Land O' Sand!
I just picked up the bike and I can say that fifth gear is now exactly what I was wanting and first gear isn't as different as I had feared. As I mentioned in this thread prior, it SEEMS to me that the bike pulls better just off idle (I'm not talking WOT stuff, just at tip-in from idle.) When I hit fifth gear, the bike just settles down nicely.
I have SE203 cams, so they may help a little bit, but it still feels better than it did before the swap. My speedo says 50 mph when my GPS said 55, so I need to do some adjusting in the Thundermax, but that's to be expected. Other than that, there are no other issues, and I felt I'd just continue this thread with this information just in case someone else might be wondering the same thing as I was. Now to go put some miles on it!
