After all these great posts and wonderful information, my owners manual still says

lost one: i would agree with and i totally understand carbs half the time it is the automatic choke adjustment plays into it also.
I also completely inderstand detonation and what causes it but thank you for the information.
next time we can have a conversation about gear oil in the tranny vs syn3 or any other vtwin 20w50 oil.

bosnmate: thanks

st john: yes it does since it is the easiest fuel to burn in Vtwin but not the best at all times
in the summer i use 91 in the winter 87 i do the same in my boat and mustang.

Never tried those personally, but every "amazing", "super", "mega" gas additive I have ever tried in my car, HD, sportbike, dirtbike and quad did NOTHING. There is no substitute for the highest octane and cleanest gas you can buy from a station IMHO.
Just so you know, high octane gas is harder to burn than low octane gas, so unless you have really high compression or you are running alot of totaltiming on your ride, you are actually getting less performance and gas milage out of high octane gas...

Chris
Very true. It's amazing the number of people that somehow think they are getting better gas. Must stock Harleys will run just fine on 89 octane.

Ever read about putting acetone (paint thinner)in your gas? Google it and find out. They state that acetone added to your fuel will help it atomizebetter andin turn helps it to completely burn resulting in better fuel combustion. I have used it in the Harley, Duramax and small engines around the house. I gained 2 mpg in the truck and can notice the running difference in the Harley. I add 2 oz per 10 gallon. It makes the molecules of the fuel slippery.

you can read just as much saying it won't make a difference and may do harm, here's an example http://www.fuelsaving.info/acetone.htm

Then why don't the gas companies already do this?

Seriously.

Mythbusters tested this. Acetone made performance and mileage worse.

Toluene will increase octane. A google search will turn up the correct formula.

.you'd do just as well performance wise by puttin a turd in your tank

So does this mean if I $hit in my gas tank every day , my all stock Ultra Classic will then be HIGH PERFORMANCE!!!!

LMAO

Ever notice that your gas milage is better in the summer than the winter. In my SUV on the highway it can vary 2-4 mpg. Reason is simple -- in cold weather the air is denser (about 10-20% or so based upon the "ideal gas law"). So the oxygen sensor calls for more gas. This is the same reason that at altitude the octane of regular gas is lower.
