I agree with Grunt. Additionally, the sticker does not mean chit. Most any Texas DPS officer will tell you that he is not required to accept the sticker as proof that you still have the insurance that you had when you got the sticker. Most officers that see the sticker probably just figure why waste the time checking the particular biker but, in my opinion, you would have to be stopped or the officer right on your azz in order to see the sticker anyway. Just a bureaucratic waste of effort and money, to my way of thinking. I will not buy the sticker as long as it is optional. I normally do not wear a helmet in Texas and I have never been stopped here on my bike.

.......Plus pay the state 5.00 for a certificate....
Wrong. You do not have to buy the certificate, that is optional at the discretion of the biker.
It is a requirement and they can write a ticket at their discretion. Trust me
It is NOT a requirement, but they can pull you over to check for rider certificate OR insurance proof if you do not have it. If anyone wrote you up with either of those 2 provisions covered, you got screwed. The $5 sticker is absolutely optional, but the only way to not be pulled over for inspection.
The sticker is a requirement to for sure avoid a ticket, the officer does not have to except proof of coverage or training. I had my wife ask about it at work(DPS Training Academy) after my West Texas stop. It is kinda like if ya got insurance but can't find the card you get a ticket then it gets dismissed once you show the court you had the coverage needed

The stickers are serialized and good for 3 years.
It is not training AND insurance, it is OR.
I didn't say AND, I did say OR.

Perearlier post from Badpig 521:

A peace officer may not arrest a person or
issue a citation to a person for a violation of Subsection (a) or
(b) if the person required to wear protective headgear is at least
21 years of age and presents evidence sufficient to show that the
person required to wear protective headgear has successfully
completed a motorcycle operator training and safety course or is
covered by a health insurance plan as described by this subsection.

I stand corrected.

The helmet exemption sticker is an option that tells the officer you have met at least one of the required exemptions for riding without a helmet. If you do not have the sticker displayed on your license plate, you would need to have physical (hardcopy) proofof having at least $10,000 worth of medical coverage (i.e., insurance card such as Aetna, HMO Blue, etc.) or proof of completion of an approved Motorcycle Training Course (here in Texas the certificate is called an MSB-8) on your person. One other thing worth mentioning here; If you or your passenger choose to wear a helmet, it must be DOT compliant. The officer can write you a ticket if it is not.I teachMSF classes here in Texas so I hope you and your passenger choose to wear a helmet. Have a safe trip.
Probally just a type obecause you teach the MSF course and all, but you have to meet two of the three requirements to not wear a helmet.

Once again, NO, NO, NO!!

If you have taken an approved rider's course and carry the proof, OR have proof of medical insurance, you will not be ticketed. You can only bypass being pulled over if you have a currently valid exemption sticker.

So it is 1 of 2 criteria to not be ticketed, and 1 to not be pulled over when riding sans helmet. There is no typo there, and you are misunderstanding the TX helmet law.

If yer gonna have a Redneck Budweiser and don't have a state sticker on, I'd stick a helment on just so you don't git pulled over for them to check you out and find something else wrong. You never know, ever policeman is different in every town.
I try not to give em a reason to look at me other than speeding.
