Default Replace tire due to age, not miles?

From previous threads, I know that the mileage people get out of their bike tires varies widely, but I waswondering if anyone thinks that a tire should be replaced after x years even if it looks all right and has over 2/32" of tread left? I never have this issue with the tires on my cage, since I drive alot and they're done in 3 years.

I think that any tire over 6 yrs old should be replaced no matter how many miles on it. There are elements in the air that work on the inner liner of tires. They are trying to inact legislation that prohibits the use of a tire over 6 yrs old.

I'm not sure about bikes but most people that have boats on trailers replace trailertires at 5 yrs regardless of condition. I already replaced the rear tire on my 07 ultra.

Rubber degrades.

If a vehicles sit for over a year without moving, replace the tires.

If your tread is close to 2/32",you need new tires now.

My 2007 Ultra has 30,000 miles on it and is about
10 months old, Iused 4 sets of tires on it so far, which
includes the stock set. I'm about to put a 5th set on
in about 2 weeks. As you can see I don't have to worry
about tire age. On my 3 motorcycles I put 6 sets of tires
on last year as the Wing and Concours do not wear
tires near as bad as the Ultra. The Ultra is a tire eater!

I always tell my customers at my shop that they should
change their tires at the end of the 3rd riding season if
they are not riding enough to wear them out.

WHY?? you might ask"

Because most people store their motorcycles in a garage
and there is alot of things in garage's that are very hard
on tires besides the owner not checking their air pressures
before EVERY RIDE!

#1 Floresent lights degrade motorcycle tires.

#2 Electric motors degrade motorcycle tires.
IE: garage door openers, furnace blower motors,
swiming pool pump motors,washer&dryer motors.
Basicly anything that gives off ion'sdegrades rubber
of all kinds as well as motorcycle tires.

#3 Sun light coming through a window intensified
by the window glass.

So it is best if you replace them even if they only have
1,000 miles on them every third year for tubeless and
the end of every second season for tube type tires as they
tend to hold moisture in the rims.

Good Luck and do as you see fit with your tires, just
remember theres a loved one that will miss you
should you make the wrong choice's!

Rubber dry rots (i.e. cracks due tot he rubber becoming dry and old). On my last bike I had 12,000 miles and plenty of tread. However, the sides of the tires were getting little cracks in them, and in between the treads. So after 4 1/2 years and 12,000 I changed them.

I don't expect the same issue on this bike, since in 3 months I have 3,000 miles on it.

I look closely at the sidewall and betweentthe treadsand let that be the determining factor for me. Sure, it may not tell all, but it is a good gauge. I am a single guy, yet have 3 cages, 2 Harleys, a boat trailer, and a bike trailer. I can't wear the tires out onall of them with miles. I surely am not going to replace tires before they need it. I have a car in my garage that I put new tires on in 1994. I drive it only a few hundred miles a year. The tires still look great.
