The Race of Gentlemen (affectionately known among the initiated as TROG) takes you back to this time, with a weekend of racing on the beaches of Wildwood, New Jersey.

Carefully curated, “period correct” cars and motorcycles compete for glory in this history lesson that also serves as an unforgettable automotive carnival weekend. To qualify, cars must have been produced before 1935 and cannot include any parts made after 1953, while motorcycles must predate 1947 and have a tank shifter, aka a “suicide clutch.”

Three classes compete at TROG: bangers (four-cylinder engine cars); flatheads (flathead V-8 engine cars); and bikes. Contests line up two-by-two to wait their turn to go head-to-head on the one-eighth-mile long beach track. Winners earn bragging rights; losers take solace in the fact that they get back in line and have another go to redeem themselves. All contestants wear period clothing, while the staging boss wears a tuxedo and top hat and the checkered flag is dropped each time by a famously high-jumping flag wielder. The racing continues thus until the rising tide overtakes the course.

Started in 2012, The Race of Gentleman is hosted by The Oilers Car Club / Motorcycle Club, which trace their lineage back to 1947 and were co-founders of the National Hot Rod Association in 1949. The race attracts contestants from across the country, and has included luminaries like Jessi Combs, who holds the women’s land speed record (not, admittedly, set at TROG).

Wasn't reffering to race, just any festival that interior decorator was at. I'd say TC are just as much a slave to fashion as Evos. Harley riders are afraid of orings and radiators.

I was glad when he left. Though we still merlot sunset color swatrches for new bikes.

The bikes will be a lot better when the baby boomers are dead, in general. Things will get fixed.

AMF? In general I cant argue that modern technology is better. being that I grew up driving 70s and 80s american made ****, I can say just about everything from the 70s IMO was was junk definitely from like 1972 forward in cars anyway.

my first fuel injected car was a 1987 Ford escort GT. Not a bad car for its time, and not much went into maintaining it.Only things that may leave you sit were ,timing belt, TFI module, fuel pump. And The only thing I remember going on it was the TFI module. There was alot of trouble free miles on that car. i got rid of it with 160 thousand on it. ford since then has built in more longevity, and a 98 Escort ZX2 that i had I ran 348 000 miles on it. All with maintenance, and replacing timing belts when its time etc. Point is, I think new cars run longer with less wrenching, dont flood on a cold winter morning, dont leave you sit. In a same sense I cant argue that modern harleys are any different. my 05 sportser and dyna have never let me sit. My neighbor also has a 05 Dyna, and I resued him on the side of the road, I found that the vacuum line on the petcock came off, plugged it in and the bike started right up.

I had a 79 Sporty that had its share of electrical gremlins. Sold it after 3 years. I was 18 when I got it and 21 when I sold it, wish I would have held on to it though. I have a little more knowledge and a lot more patience these days.

LOL, very true. I wish I was as smart now as I thought I was back then.

I have thought about buying an Ironhead Sporty, but my 05 runs fine and I don't really need any projects right now. I have seen where they cost the same as a newer one also so it is definitely something that you would want when there are more modern offerings in the same price range.

I only had one Sportster, 1976 XLCH, and enjoyed it immensely ... Put a lot of miles on and several long trips through the east ... Some days I wish I had it back

Wow, interesting statement there. As a certified baby boomer, I would suggest that many of us are the reason why old iron is still on the road today.

You want us dead and gone. I'd say my problem is that the newer generation forgot who they are and where they came from.

I'll stick with my Pans and Shovels. You break down on your Twin cam and have an ignition problem you have to call a tow to get you somehwere to fix it yourself (if you can). I just need a matchstick cover to reset my points and the bike fires right up and I am down the road.

Not knocking technology per se. I undertsand that is progress. I enjoy looking at newer bikes (from a distance). I believe the EVO platform was the best that HD built. Don't think the EVOs were a slave to fasion. Think there were way too many different models offered up. MoCo flooded the markets and then wondered why they could not sell more.

Harley riders (my generation) afraid of o-rings and radiators? Not hardly. Maybe just you and yours afraid of carbs and kickers.
