As for dropping a helmet....I'm sorry, but I call bullshit. No offense intended toward you, IBE, but I think that is just bunk. If a helmet is so delicate that one drop compromises it's integrity, I have to wonder how useful it would have been in the first place.
I am in agreement a new helmet is not a bad idea at this point.
I never knew about helmet lifespans. My curiosity has got me looking up different articles. More than one says there is no definitive proof time on its own degrades the EPS foam and it very well could be marketing.
Yes I realize its my head and "do want you want" ....but it is interesting. One article listed the 5 years as folk lore that people just repeat.
Not arguing anyones opinion or advice just lookin stuff up as its new information to me

I knew this thread had the prospect of being entertaining as soon as I saw the title. I wasn't disappointed.

If you have friends near Fukushima or Chernobyl maybe you could mail it to them and ask 'em to send it back after a week or so.

2000 or 200....it's horse hockey as far as I'm concerned, but I'd love to see what the helmet 'purist' would do if they scuffed a 2k smart helmet

Of course this thread is entertaining, after all, it is us, it's winter, and if you've never used an older helmet, well, you're either a newer rider or been pretty well off most your life.

Maybe we should require people to qualify themselves, after all, a post from a rider who has never worn a helmet telling you your 5, or 10 year old helmet is a piece of crap just might be taken with a grain of salt, or a symptom of PMS.

But a guy, just barely making payments on his Harley, yet buys a new Shoei full face every 5 years because his 5 year old one is now unsafe, might have a point to argue from.

We could expand it, state what oil you use, and at what mileage you change it before posting on an oil thread...

Nah, lets just throw it all out there and let Darwin decide the survivors.

Personally, I am not going to worry that my helmet turned 5 years old today, nor do I worry when I ride my Bronson Bike, that my Bell is 56 years old this year.

My state is a free state, so is my 5 or 56 year old helmet better than no helmet. You'll have a tough argument with me that no helmet is safer than an older one, but I'll still enjoy a beer with you somewhere on the road. You're Internet opinion of helmets does not effect how I think about you. We've got bigger issues.
