Good quality chaps

IMO you will be better off with a pair of textile riding pants, both in cost and results. You can find them in windproof, waterproof, and also mesh. And they offer protection against abrasion if you were to actually fall off the bike and slide. Not that chaps wont help some but if you get dislodged from your bike, your are probably going to land and slide on your *** or hips and not your legs.
When it's cold, I have thin long johns under my jeans, or lined Carhart jeans if I know the sun just isn't coming out. We are riding into Alberta to Banff for 4 days next week...thinkin' the long johns are comin' with me!
Never into the chaps thing, to each their own.

Been to Banff and jasper couple times.
Nice thing about chaps is they pack ok. I have been think8ng about something easy to put on for work in the morning . Some thing quick, and warmer.
I got carhartt regular and extreme. If you don't need fire retardant the extreme are awesome in deep snow.
Againbwind break is important.
My diamond gusset jeans with lined knees are good for many evenings

Chaps get ridiculed on HDF, quite a bit. I love them. I rode to work yesterday, it was in the 40s. I was the only bike out. I live 20 minutes from work, it takes me a minute to put them on. It would take much longer to put leather pants on. If it gets into the thirties, I wear long johns. On an Ultra Classic with lowers, your crotch is out of the wind, and protected by the seat. I have never frozen my jewels.
My chaps are custom made Elk-skin, and soft as a baby’s butt. I bought a nice used pair of Fox Creek chaps for my son, off HDF, and they are nice.

Fox Creek has good stuff.
Walter Dyer chaps are top quality if you can find'em. I'm not sure if they still offer chaps but they show up now and then on the pre-owned market.
I have been wearing my Hein Gericke lined chaps for 35 yrs and a LOT of miles. IMHO..they are the best.
If you actually RIDE...and have respect for quality...avoid the El-Cheapo Pakistani crap that you will find in vendors tents at rallies.

I used the cheap for years and then won a pair worth $100 and took that certificate and another $75 to get a very nice lined pair that really made a difference...Fox Creek is nice I go to the store just about every year, will be there next week.
the Textile stuff I will say I think is way warmer and packs easy.
i got a First gear Kilimanjaro 3 season jacket last year and it is above and beyond better than any leather I have worn.
