How often do you service a bike?
I bought a used heritage classic in late april and have put about 2k miles on it, I figure its about due at the very least for an oil change. But how often do you need to change other fluids, and perform other work on it? Im gonna order the service manual and perform the work myself as to save money and all it seems to do is storm every god damn day here in NY so if I cant ride I'll work on her.

Did my 1k at around 1k and my 5k at around 5k. Now, I will do my next three hole change at 7500, and every 2500 after that. With synthetics, it is said you can wait longer. But, with the cost of my bike, I want to keep it in as good of shape as I can, JMHO. I would do your service right away. Being that it is a used bike, no telling if the guy kept up on the services. Unless, you have records. Either way, since this is your first service, grab the manual and do the 10 service. That way, you know all is good with your new, to you, bike.

5000 in the winter and 3000 in the summer.
Tools to get.
A service manual
Torque Wrenches. foot pound and inch pound. no don't try to convert inch lbs to ft lbs. A foot pound torque wrench does not have the resolution and accuracy that low on the scale.
A good set of torex bits. With a #27. Use a 25 on a 27 and you will be drilling the head off.
A good socket and wrench set.
An oil filter wrench. I use the one that grabs it from the end.
Cable lube Lots of opinions on this one. I use a teflon based lubricant.
It's almost 2am and my fingers are killing me from typing. Did I forget anything?

Even if I don't reach the 2500 to 5000 miles I never let the oils stay in my bike for over one year. Once I had only 50 miles but still changed the oils after 1 year.
