I've used Razer blade but must be careful. Then after hit it with mother's polish and steel wool. Did it do a friend's bike from wife's boot, she was like your going to scratch it, said yes u can if not careful.

Exhaust cold + water and aluminum foil. Wad foil up dip it in the water and rub the heck out of it.
I had a rear wheel on a bike that had years of TERRIBLE brake dust on it and the wheel was nearly completely black, chrome cleaner and aluminum polish wouldn't touch it without serious effort. Scrubbed it with aluminum foil and cold water and it came off instantly.

Guitar pick; Fender heavy won't scratch the chrome.

That happened to my brother a few years back. Probably the hardest thing to clean off ever. He used lot of different products and many hours of elbow grease. Cannot remember what worked best. I do not that I dodge them if at all possible. Actually dodge two yesterday!

No laughing here because I know it is a pain.

Good luck

Get your pipes good and hot then wipe it off with something that won't melt. Yes, newspapers do serve a purpose.

This.

I've had a couple times a plastic grocery bag was blowing around and got caught on the exhaust pipe of my Sportster.

Heat melted the plastic onto the pipe and heat makes it easy to take off, I just use a wadded up paper towel and wear leather gloves.

I just dealt with this a few minutes ago. I have a weakness for jelly beans and they are putting Dollar General stores in rural areas just to catch idiots like me. Was putting that bright yellow bag in the brake side saddle bag and it drug right across the pipe.

I have always used 0000 steel wool with good results. I make sure to use a clean piece and have never even used WD40, just done it dry. I guess if the pipe is dirty WD40 would help. I often wax the pipe first then use the steel wool. The wax seems to help keep scratches at bay.
