Default Motorcycle Course on a Scooter?

Do any of those basic skills courses let students bring their own bikes?

I know a lady who wants a motorcycle license, wants to take a skills course, and only wants to ride a scooter. That is, she has zero interest in ever riding a motorcycle with a manual transmission.

Thx

That may depend on your state? I know here in MA, when people attend, they can take their own bike, so long as they have a valid permit. I dont know if there is a CC limit on them or not. But, I have observed several courses for new riders, and seen a few ride their own in.

The MSF advanced class you have to use your own bike. The beginner class they supply the bikes. I've taken the advanced class twice in 19 years.

I would imagine that if the scooter qualifies as a vehicle that needs to have motorcycle registration and license plates, it shouldn't be a problem.

When I took my Minnesota MSF beginners class, we rode the provided bikes, nobody brought their own. Not sure if they'd allow that or not.

I can see them not- as the instruction is for beginners, and it's probably easier to have everyone on the same type of bike- so the instructors don't have to address one off questions, etc.....

Have her log on and go here:

https://msf-usa.org/students.aspx#brc-scooter

She can then search for the closest BRC Scooter class!

Thanks for that, but they really short-change the training in that course compared to the motorcycle course. She's riding a 250cc scooter, going at speeds much greater than a 50cc.

When I took the class in '98 in FL, they allowed you to ride your own bike if it was 250ccs or less. I had a 250cc D/S, but chose to ride the course's bikes instead. They have you do some tight maneuvering, and I almost went down once, and we had abot 3-4 people go down. All mild spills, no injuries or real damage to the bikes, but still glad I didn't use my own. As for learning the manual - I wouldn't sweat that much. Good knowledge to have just in case, and IMO its much easier to learn on a bike than a car
