I always ran an oil cooler on my shovels. Not so ,much on my evo's. My twin cam had one. Never had one leak and the one on my old shovel has been on there since 1979 with no issues. Oh and it's a Lockhart. The oils are alot better now days too.

I think even dino oil is about 20% additives.

I upgraded the engine on my 07 flhtc to a 103 HO from a 14 FLHX and after a year I adde$ a Ultracool fan assisted oil cooler, it’s still hot but it’s better with the oil cooler I know. When stuck in traffic or pushing it hard for a bit it seems like the perfdkesnt go away as much as it use to.
Nothing scientific here, just seat of my pants feeling after owning it for 15 years and putting 109000 miles on it.
If your bike is generating heat to the point it makes you uncomfortable while riding it, install one. I've had them in the past and they do help to keep the oil temp down. Is it necessary other than to keep you cooler while riding? I don't think so.
I have several oil coolers... sitting in a box, in the shed. When I buy a used bike with one on it, I add it to my collection box. I don't remember ever seeing a harley engine severely damaged from not having one. Seen a few locked up from having a cooler that started leaking though.
I have built stroker 106 that can get hot. While stuck in heavy traffic with no option for splitting, the bike has actually gotten so hot it started to misfire. This has happened probably 3 times since the new build. The problem with an oil cooler, they do not work without airflow. In the few instances where I had heat issues...an oil cooler would not have made any difference.
Even when not moving oil coolers work to some extent as the oil still flows through the finned area. They dont work as good as when you are moving but even standing still they will cool your oil by at least 7 to 10 degrees
