Yearly mileage:

<1000 - non rider
1000-5000 - low
5000 - 10,000 average
10000 - 20000 high
>20000 - Hardcore rider

That being said in the first year of Harley ownership I had 8500 motorcycle miles.

I seem to average about 1000 miles per month. Kind of depends on where you live. In Texas 1000 milescould bejust a couple of days a month.

heck - the average cage is driven what - 12,000 a year? so i would think based on that, anything over that would be a lot.

living in chicago, you realistically can only ride for 7-9 months. cold don't bother me but i have a problem with snow and ice (and the salt they use).

since i work in the city, i don't ride to work. rush hour driving just does not make it, as well as parking costing 50% more than the train, and my train ride is only 21 minutes (express).

i also won't ride if i have or will have anything to drink. so if the wife want to go out nice and we plan on having a bottle of wine.............................

i try to ride after work, even if only for shopping and running around. a trip to sam's was interesting with all the stuff stack in the bags and trunk and roped down on the passenger seat.

grocery shopping was interesting with the melon on the passenger seat.

but i haven't figure out how to put 4x8 plywood or 10 ft conduit on the bike.

so for me, i might top out at around 6k before i have to put her away for hybernation.

but i have been know to just start her up for a bit in the evening - oh yeh - right before i hit the sack.

wish my situation would allow for more, but it is what it is

Does cummuting miles factor into this? I know it's still in the saddle but it doesn't seem like quality riding miles to me. You could be putting 50 miles run trip a day going to work and racking up a lot of miles but you're not going anywhere.

Good Question, I ride ~100 miles a day round trip to work, 4 days a week which is most of my miles. But, everytime you leave you come back to the same spot so it's basiclly the same. Riding is ridingIMHO.

I purchased my /07 Night train on 6 March 2007, I have put almost 8000 miles on it since then. How many miles have you put on a bike, and what do you consider alot?
To me, a lot is when your riding habits interfer with your family life... other than that, would you wonder if you drive your car "a lot"? Do you drive your car more than your neighbor? Too many stereotypes... ride and enjoy.... JMO

A mile is a mile. I have a pretty nice commute to work. Mostly horse farms with a few cow and corn farms to mix things up. Sure makes going to a work a lot more fun on the bike than in the SUV.

8,000 miles in three months is a pretty good amount of riding IMO. However, is that joy riding, or commuting? If commuting is involed I think it would lower the "value".
When I bought my Vulcan Classic 1500 end of April 2006, I had over 8,000 on it when I traded it in on my 07 Ultra on August 5th 2006. No commuting, all joy riding.
Since then I have over 10,000 on the Ultra, and another 3,000on the 04 Heritage I bought in February.
Getting ready for a 30 day 7-9,000 mile vacation ride in 2 weeks! That will be a lot of riding!
