Default Why is drive belt on left side?

I posted this earlier within a thread, and didn't get a response. So I will try it as afree standingpost. Why is the drive belt on the left side on Big Twins? It would be a lot easier to change belts if it were on the right side, as it is on Sportys, asthere would be no need to get into the primary. Somebody enlighten me.

Only good answer at this late date is that's how the designer wanted it.

OK, but my question still stands. Why couldn't they make the separate tranny case with the drive belt on the right side?
