Why is drive belt on left side?

RE: Why is drive belt on left side?
because the chain had to be on the left to get some oil on it.and when they went to the belt they wanted the bike to have the same classic harley look and it still as that look.so thats what is so good about a new harley still as that classic look.

I don't think there are any real reasons for the left side location on today's bikes, except tradition. A tranny redesign could be easily accomplished, or even licensed from Baker. The increased production vs Baker would cause unit price to be significantl lower.
Thing is HD, along with every other durable goods manufacturer, wants their cake, and to eat it, too. They want the reputation of making reliable and long-lasting goods, but want the buyer to have the desire to buy new every time they slap on a minor chrome gee-gaw. I know several (so-called) bikers (choke, puke, and spit) who traded for a new model when they found the price of having the primary torn down to replace belt & sprockets.
