What year did Harley davidson start adding primary oil??

 

Probably the year they put a primary on the bike.

 

First year forthe Electraglide, 1965. That was the first one that had a sealed primary case that had its own oil. Prior to that, the engine breather dumped oil mist into the primary, and the oil that condensed out was fed to the chain. That's why the old Pans and prior always had a few drops of oil under them. They were supposed to.

 

 

Hi yes I understand that and thank you. My 69 gennys primary gets its oil from the oil pump. My friend adds primary oil to his shovelhead? I was curious of when this change took place. Some say to add primary oil to mine but manual does not specify that.

Your friend may have isolated his primary like the later Evo. I've done it to mine, as have many other Shovel owners.
You block off the engine oil feed and return, then make sure it's vented, and add primary oil.
