Your bike is designed to NOT start unless the bike is in neutral, OR the clutch is pulled in OR both. Doing both takes a little load off the starter.
If you are in gear and pull the clutch the bike should still crank and start.
If you are in neutral the bike should start even if the clutch is not pulled.
