Default Heated grips, TBW and reliability question

I’m changing my bars on my Low Rider and I’m thinking about installing heated grips. A couple of questions: Since the bike is TBW, am I correct in that I’m limited to HD brand grips, since the power connector is in the twist grip? And I’ve heard that they aren’t reliable, If they’re going to cook after a season, I’m not going to waste the time. Does anyone know if these things last?

Thanks.

Have you considered heated gloves instead? I thought about heated grips but considering normal grips don't last, I sure wouldn't want to have to add in the additional cost.

I don't know if you have to stay with the Harley brand grips but the grips that came on my Limited have lasted 3 years so far, still get pretty warm.

I thought you did because of the way the power is run through the TBW unit.

But I have an interesting idea. Re: My fear that they will die young - I’m thinking I could install a disconnect in the left bar end, so if the grips die, I don’t have to remove bars and pull new wires, and I just disconnect the bad grips and replace with new, using the existing wires, since both sides will have disconnects.. hmm, interesting. I have to see the power draw and if I can find appropriately rated weatherproof connectors...

The plain black grips that come on the Limiteds have a great rep for longevity.... the fancy MOCO accessory grips not so much.

Can't answer your wiring question, but the HD heated grips I had installed on my '16 Roadglide are still working great after two years and 20,000 miles.

Any specific years? Or just look up any recent Ultra?

I have a set on my ultra, I don't remember what brand they are because they have been on my bike for about ten years and work awesome and get used allot living in N.D. seems spring always comes late and fall always comes early here!
they will actually get hot enough to keep your hands warm in very thick gloves! and you can use any style grips you want because these are very thin and are applied to the bars and the grips go over the top of them! ran the wiring through the bars so you wouldn't even know they were heated

I don't think they're year specific, just look up stock grips for a Limited..... I don't think Ultras have them?

Sorry, no idea why I said Ultra. Meant Limited. Thanks though!
