Hard to start hot because of cam with high vavle overlap
I built my motor 10,000 miles ago and wanted to get some tips on what to do. Bike runs great but once hot it wants to kick back. The compensator is good. The trouble I'm having from what I here is the cam offers Alot of intake close.. And cams with vavle overlap are tough to start since the vavle is shut on start up. Lately things have got worse as old battery died and was forced to get a cheap auto zone battery and seems the starter is doing a small grind on start up.. Not sure if that's because of a underpowered battery or bad starter.. The battery is pretty lame because cold it don't have the CCM the stock battery had.. I'm soon to replace the battery with something better. As far motor any tips for a cam with vavle overlap and kickback? Also today I wanted to see if the bike would kickback with no spark so when the motor was hot I removed the wires and started bike.. Still kicked back with no plugs and then it started.. How can a motor start with no spark? Maybe a hot piece of carbon build up

Figure your cold cranking compression here and see if it's too much for your current setup.

Put a compression tester on each cylinder to know how much pressure you are dealing with for certain.
A better, more powerful battery and heavy duty battery cables will help.
I think I would start there before replacing the starter or installing compression releases.

Hard Starting
This has been recommended many times in the past but here we go again...
When the bike is hot and before you try to start it, turn the run/stop switch to the run position. Then turn on the ignition switch and immediately hit the starter, not giving it time to prime with the fuel pump. This startup system usually works on high temperature starts regardless of cams.
If that doesn't do the trick then have your heads drilled for manual or automatic compression releases, but I don't really think that is needed with your setup.
Since your bike is a 2003, I would suggest you check you wiring for good ground and no corrosion in the hot wire or the ground to the starter.
Good luck
