Default Quality issue with Metzler tires???

On another site a guy posted a story about his rearMetzler having an issue... chunks of the tire came off while he was going down the road.
I didn't pay much attention to the post, figured it was just one of those things that can happen on occasion.

Well, I just came back from a visit at one of the dealers in my area (we have three), I asked for a quote on Metzlers and install. The guy told me they have had a lot of issues with Metzlers - trouble getting them balanced and problems with chunks of tire coming off!! That dealer (Latus Motors) has decided to stop mounting Metzlers all together due to concerns about safety.

Have any of you heard about this issue?

More importantly - if any of you just switched to Metzlers within the last six months to a year, I suggest you look into this a bit further.

I mounted a 170/60/17 ME880 and the matching front 90/90 roughly 600 miles well withen 6 months ago. Didn't balance either of them and they are smooth. So I deffinatley do not have the balance problem with mine. Nothing has chucked off them either. But I will look into it.

I mount Metzeler tires almost daily, I ride on
Metzeler tires on all my bikes. I rode 70,000
miles in 2006 all on Metzeler tires. My customers
have had no issues at all. I will say I've had some
take3 oz of wieght to balance them lately, but
I've had the same on other brands as well.

I look at tire problems like this: Most all motorcycle
riders never check and adjust their tire pressures
before EVERY ride like their suppose to, they are
lucky if they do it once a year period! So IMO tires
are going to fail, which they do and sometimes they
kill people when they do. I figure it is natures way
of getting rid of people that won't look out for
themselves or their loved ones by checking their
air pressures before every ride no matter what
brand of tire their riding on!

I have been at rallies where they checked 3,500
motorcycle tires and none of them even had close
to the correctair pressures in them. They were all
low, most were almost flat in fact. That doesn't
speak well for how well most riders take care of their
tires, themselves or their loved ones.. [:'(]

So I'd say if you want Metzeler tires or any other
brand of tire, just go get them and for everyone
you knows sake check your air pressures and
tread condition before every ride like your suppose
to!

Good Luck and Ride Safe my friend...

I've run Metzler's on numerous bikes over the years and have never had a single problem. As with any mass-produced item some will occasionally be defective, but this is so regardless of brand...

I'll admit to being guilty of not doing it everytime. Just finished a 1600 mile roundtrip and didn't check beforehand cause I couldn't find my gauge. I hadn't done it in a while and knew I needed to.

We were fueling one day (at our destination) and one of the guys pointed out my tire was low. I measured it at 20 PSI.

I have Metzlers and have never had a problem - except that my front tire slowly looses pressure.I'll make it a point to be more diligent.

I have run Metzlers now for 80k miles with never a problem. I use the MSF TCloks checks before riding. I check my air pressure every time I wash the bike. I get good mileage and never have had a problem. Am I being **** about checking the tires? I don't think so because they're the only things between the road and my azz. check them tires boys and girls.

After my original post, I stopped by Columbia HD in Vancouver WA to ask them what they have heard about this.
The guy I talked to said the only thing he has heard is from customers coming from Latus Motors in Portland. he said after the first time he heard about the balancing issue, he talked with their Service Manager - he said they mount Metz's daily and don't have any problems getting them mounted. Guy i was talking to also said that the chunks flying off was happening on their (Latus') Dyno machine.

So, maybe this is an issue with one dealer not doing something correct, I don't know.

Bingo" Bingo"

if you had of said chunking on dyno runs in the first place that
would have explained everything! I've done thousands of dyno
pulls and seen many tires chunk treads regardless of brand!

That is why I never owned a rear wheel dyno. I only use a chain
or belt drive unit that hooks to your counter shaft sprocket. This
works the same as a rear wheel dyno but does not have tire
slippage to through your numbers off. Direct hook up dynos are
dead accurate due to no tire slippage.

The dynos (so called dynos) they use in most shops are just glorified
calculators that burn up tires. Most shops can't afford a real dyno

A: because of cost

B: because street bike customers won't pay $250.00 an hour for dyno time
on a real dyno. Racers have no choice because they need facts about their
engines not calulated guessing like the play dynos do..

No body really cares if tires fly appart on a play dyno because it is expected.
At least it is expected by people who no what their doing! Most HD shops
now days have kids that are parts changers working in them and they really
don't know much about anything!

So don't sweat the toy junk stuff, leave that to the kids that don't know better!

My front tire seems to lose air more than the rear too, guess it takes the brunt of the abuse more. No problems to report otherwise

Air pressure loss on motorcycle tires is usually caused
by the rims not being cleaned properly before mounting
the new tire! The rims get a build up of rubber on them
and if it is not cleaned of before mounting a new tire it
will not allow the tire bead to seat correctly...
