As I remember, and I could be wrong, Harley got them as part of a war reparations deal from WW 2. Lots of "foreign" businesses on the losing side ended up belonging to the winners. VW was a notable example of one that stayed German, Nobody wanted them.
Used to flat track a 350 Sprint back in the early '70's. Champion frame, no brakes! There's a whole class for them at vintage flat track races (AHRMA).

That's interesting that nobody wanted VW... I wonder how many companies had second thoughts after seeing the success of the Beetle? Ha ha.
I have an 1978 SX-250. This was the last year for them. I'm told they only made about 468.
Harley bought the Aermacchi company so that they could compete with Honda in the small bike area.
Mine is still in need of restoration.
