rode my bikes over 25 years to work. Living in Long Island drove 50 miles each way into NYC during late spring thru early winter. When it got cold just got 5 feet behind a Semi to break the wind and save some fuel.
When we moved to Staten Island I drove into Brooklyn going over the Verrazano Bridge.
Had a family, didn't have much money and only one car, so (by choice) it was the bike for me.
Drove thru torrential downpours and heavy winds pushing me across lanes on the bridge. Lane splitting on the LIE and all i heard was click, click, click of the side view mirrors.
Lane split racing with other bikers on the Southern State Parkway.
Commuting was fun and many experiences, but it is not for everyone.

It isn't raining steady I ride to work main reason I bought the RK honestly, bay area that usually means I have 300- 320 or more sunny riding day a year easy, winter out here is our wet season, rare to see a hard freeze at night and 50ish daytime. I ride to avoid the commute traffic, bike gives me back an hour to hour & half a day I otherwise would spend sitting behind a wheel.

It is fantastic, try it one of these days and you will see. Get a 20 oz Dr Pepper, or Coke and drink about a third of it and then dump one or two packs of peanuts in it, and give it a try. Not only does it taste good, it is fun to do. It takes a little practice to learn how to pour the peanuts in to the bottle, but by the time you get it figured out, you will be hooked.

my bike gets better mileage that the pickup.
but somehow the 40 mile ride to work turns into a 100 mile ride home.
for the record I ride every day unless:
too hot
too cold
too windy
rain
have to carry something big and heavy
just the highlights of a very elaborate formula that I wrestle with every day.
bike ride usually wins.
