Default Does riding keep your brain younger?

Things I think about....As I'm driving (not riding) into work today (on call, got called in., needed to take tools and have the ability to carry stuff if I have to) a couple 80 yr olds pass me in some Oldsmobile car , slow down, weave all over the road and proceed to go faster, then slower, then the speed limit, then slower, then go over the yellow line, then the white line. I really doubt they were on Twitter or Farcebook.<sic>

I am stuck behind them for aprox 15kms just due to limited passing lanes and oncoming traffic. I feel my own hair getting grayer, but since I started bikin last year I am learning to relax and just allow the stupid folks more elbow room.

I notice a LOT of older riders here (just like me, 55 next week) and I have to wonder.....these riders in their 50's, 60's, 70's, and hopefully 80's surely HAVE to be smarter than Ma and Pa Kettle that I followed into work today. Otherwise they'd be laying dead in a ditch or wiped out at the next intersection.

Do you guys n' gals thinks that bikin' keeps you sharp? It's not why I got back into riding a year or so ago, but I do hope it's one benefit I hadn't thought of.

Discuss

I think doing any activity that engages your mind, and that you enjoy doing is bound to keep you sharper than just wearing an ***-groove in your couch.

So yeah, I think riding helps.

That’s a good question. All I know is that people who keep working when they’re older tend to be sharp. Riding a bike is more work than driving a car. So I’d say possibly.

I'd say "yes".
Me anyway.
I've seen a few folk go down because of dropping out of society and not engaging
in any interaction with other folk. No thinking and solving problems.

I think it (riding) also makes me a more conscientious cage driver.

"Use it or lose it" as they say. Quickest way to die is to vegetate in front of a TV set.

Performing any skill regularly may stave off memory issues. Glen Campbell was an example of this.

Can't say but I like to think so. Situational awareness goes a long way.

I’m hoping that riding my bike, my road bicycle and playing music will keep me sharp into old age.
