Was out on the scoot yesterday riding through two lane overgrown Pa. farm country roads. I was scanning the road ahead visually like I was trained in the MC safety course. , looking for deer, in these parts they are out there and certain roads I call "deer alley" Anyway I was doing about 40-45 and I happened to see a two hundred pounder, a dough. I just braked, and reeled the speed in quickly, figured I'd reduce the impact. The deer was off the road and stepping out, it saw me slowing down and crossed right in front of me. I down shifted and got back up to speed, back to 45 mph. I think whats strange is, I didn't get scared or "**** my pants" at all, it was as if I was reacting to something expected, like a car pulling out of a driveway. Only thing freaky about deer is when they walk right into the side of you , that would be unavoidable. But anyway, anyone else have any deer experience while riding? I know some people mention it all the time, usually the non riding folk, its one of their excuses for not riding at all.

 

 

You' be hard pressed to find someone on this Forum who hasn't had some sort of interaction with deer. And it's not only motorcycles:

 

Deer are the reason I avoid riding at night in any remote or semi remote areas.

 

Be careful getting back up to speed. I have had 5 deer run in front of me, at one time. Like a tag team.

 

Riding in to work one dark morning, saw one backlit by oncoming headlights, slowed way down next thing I knew about 5 more just wandered out in front of me. I don't wander out too far pre-dawn or post sunset .time. frames.

 

Im in southwestern pa and i will not ride at dusk or dawn as thats when theyre on the move and when im in the work truck with the ranch hand its game on. I hate the little bastards, theyre a nuisance animal.

 

The only deer I have hit was in broad daylight at 3pm in the afternoon. Did $2300 dollars damage to my Ford Fusion company car and I was in a 45 MPH speed zone.

A few years back the wife and I took the long way to Sunday evening church service in her Mustang GT. There were two cars ahead of us in a slight left curve when we saw a deer split between those two cars, no one panicked and before we could say anything one ran between us and the car ahead and I looked to the right and saw a third one cross immediately behind us. We were all very lucky as were the deer.

Now just today I had to run down to Charlotte. Heading back up I stop at our branch in Huntersville to visit with my boss. He is a deer hunter. Less than a mile from the office I see a medium size Doe standing near the road. It is a 35 MPH speed zone and I slowed and the deer looked at me, then looked the other way and safety crossed the road behind me! Maybe there are a few SMART deer. I told my boss and he had a similar story from a trip to VA last weekend.

You can expect a deer at anytime and any place!

Saw where some guy hit one on 460 near VT just this weekend. You know its a motorcycle/deer thing when its on the nightly news. I know the guy survived they haven't said anything else. Deer are all over the place where I live..one of the reason I haven't ridden at night...heck you have to dodge them mid day and I think my next door neighbor feeds them because he as a herd in his yard constantly...lol. Someone on the forum here called them "Rats On Stilts"..quite fitting.
