Default 2017 Street Glide Special Rear Shocks

Does any body know if you can replace the rear shocks on a 2017 Street Glide Special without replacing the front suspension. I want to replace the factory installed rear shocks with the standard size adjustable rear shocks. I have been told two different things from 2 different dealerships.

I’m not sure why you would question whether you need to change the front shocks if you want to replace the rear ones, but no, you don’t have to do anything to the front.

If you're going to improve the rear suspension it makes sense to upgrade the front, too. But there's nothing wrong with starting with the rear shocks and see how it rides for you. Can always do the front later.

Default 2017 Street Glide Special Rear Shocks

Thanks guys for your thoughts ;The reason I ask the question is that Harley Davidson does not show that their regular size adjustable rear shocks fit the 2017 Street Glide special, only the stock low adjustable shocks fit and they don't give any other suggestions. So when i asked the mechanics at one HD store they said i had to replace both the front shocks and the rear. When i spoke to another HD store they told me I could replace just the stock rear shocks. I would prefer to replace just the rear shocks, i just want a little more travel on the rear.

I put 13" shocks on a Street Glide Special, no problem. Didn't bother with the front forks, but if I had kept the old Hippo, maybe I would.

You don't have to stick with HD shocks or Progressive. I tried those and until I got a set of Ohlins I was never happy with the results. If you really want to improve the ride and handling, give Howard at Motorcycle Metal a call. He'll discuss your needs and riding style and come up with some solid suggestions.

I live less than 10 miles from the Pro-Action guys so my choice was easy. They installed the 13" rears, fork kit and adjusted it for my weight on my 2016 Ultra Classic. About 1500 for the whole set up but what an outstanding improvement over stock. They work great solo or two up. No dive in the front end on braking. The rears soak up all of the big bumps but never bottoms out on us.

I have no experience with the other brands, so I can't give any help on them. Good luck on your decision.

I upgraded just the rear shocks to 13” Russ Wernimont shocks on my cvo street glide. Made an instant improvement. Just put 1200 miles on them this week, great ride, bike stays planted on the pavement and rock steady at higher speeds.

Lots of better options than stock in the aftermarket. I have Legends front and rear on my EGS and I love them. I have Progressive front and rear on both my Fat Boys and they are night and day better than the stock Harley stuff. Like others have said, no need to do both ends, but the improvement in ride and handling is sure worth it.

I don't know where you are in California, but Russ Wernimont is in Murrieta. https://russwernimont.com/ I don't have any experience with RWD, but the they get good reviews. If you can work directly with any of the excellent aftermarket suspension people getting exactly what you want and the proper set up that is the way to go.
