Carbon Fibre helmets break down??
I heard yesterday that carbon fibre breaks down under UV light unless they're painted. They were discussing it in regards to aircraft and such but I think the carbon fibre used is the same stuff that is used in helmets. Wonder what'll happen with those 'natural' unpainted carbon fibre helmets.
anyone else ever heard this?

Carbon fibre plane fell out of the air couple years ago at the air show. Caron fibre could not hold the air pressure.

Carbon fiber may break down in sunlight but it would have to be over years and years..... many HIPO parts are unpainted and just fine. Mountain bike forks and frames, cars, etc.

The majority ofthe helicopterI flyis Composite Carbon Fiber. Even the rotor blades are a composite material. We stress that material several times a day, and it sits in the sun all the time.
Pretty sure you will break down before the carbon fiber.

The carbon can and will break down.Of course if you replace the helmet often enough it may be no problem to leave it untreated. But, if it is not painted you should apply a UV protectant called 303. I use it on my carbon fiber bicycle and it is used in aerospace. It puts a nice shine back in the finish. Good stuff!
