It's been about 2 years now since I did this. The biggest improvement is not having to clean the throttle body. It's still in great shape and does not have any buildup at all. I did just replace the air filter last week because it was starting to come apart at the seams. The bike started running bad and I thought maybe I had sprung an intake leak. It turned out to be a bad wide band sensor on the rear cylinder. I replaced that and all is perfect again. You will get many opinions on this subject but I know for a fact my bike is running as good now as it was 2 years ago with just oil changes and a new sensor. I also haven't had the symptoms of pinging or carbon builup like I did before. The motor is staying cleaner inside and it's way more than just hokey pokey magic.

 

I wanted to use (smaller) stainless steel fittings instead of brass, and 6AN braided stainless fuel line, so I made up my own "kit". I also used Spectre chrome hose end clamps, and ran the lines to a Golan catch can. The parts were under $120.00... I have them listed on pg.74 of my Rocker C thread if interested...

 

Naw...I just wanted to get rid of the oil drippin' out the air filter cover, and honestly...I think I overfilled my oil slightly is why it was doing that.

I will say that the DK Customs DIY kit is a real boon for a guy who isn't familiar with minor fabrications/projects, but after I got the kit, I realized that I could have gone into my parts stash and come up with most of the things to get the job done, or gone to my local auto parts store and got the hoses, nipples, yada yada, and for a lot less. That said, when you buy the kit, you have everything you need and instructions too...so it's not a bad deal for most guys.

 

Anyone have issues with oil blowing out a pushrod cover after installing one of these breathers?
I was pushing it a little harder the other day, holding 70+ against a good head wind, when I noticed a little oil coming out of a rear cylinder pushrod comer.
I wiped it down, slowed to 65, and no more oil.
Maybe just a coincidence that a seal failed shortly after installing the breather kit, but seems a little unlikely.

 

I had a 95" kit installed on my 02 FXD TC88 at 34K miles. I was amazed with the amount of carbon on the piston tops, could have been fuel could have been oil vapors, When you start adding product on top of the piston it's conceivable the compression will start going up or creating hot spots causing pre-detonation. There hasn't been any reports of engines destroying themselves but IMHO the engine is compromised.

 

A site that I visited showed before and after shots of a cylinder/piston. The before shot showed a lot of carbon build up and the same piston after the breather kit had been installed and roughly 20K miles had been put on the bike. The after shot showed a relatively clean piston.

 

I had them on my 2012 Super glide custom. Had very little issue with blow back on the bike and kept the oil filled correctly. Catch can is fine but you just have to make sure you clean it out regularly. I'm sure you already know this but you should do a new tune if you are replacing the stock AC. Enjoy

 

Funny...i had the exact same thing happen and thought it was just a coincidence also. I put the original intake back on and it stopped. I left the original on all last summer and just reinstalled my DK Customs intake with the external breather again last week and seems ok now...so far anyway. I had the bike in to my dealer to get seals changed and everything last year...nothing stopped the leak.

on my carb'd '02 FXD. Pulled the rocker boxes to pull the pushrods when doing cams, so I installed the newer breathers while I was in there & enlarged the drain holes to 1/8". Filter doesn't look like any oil has even reached it.



Barely visible/very discrete as well.
