Default New rider from NJ

Hello,
I'm Will, a new rider from NJ. Looking for a HD but here's my dilemma, I'm 6'4", 295lbs.

From my Google research I've found a dyna wide glide is a good choice for a tall rider. But other people tell me I'll look like a giant on it and not be comfortable (since it's more of a bar hopper) and a better choice would be something like a fat boy with apes. I fit pretty well on my friends 08 heritage softtail but something like that isn't in my budget.

Help a big guy out. Thanks.

I would not recommend a Sportster (too small for your size) or a touring rig (you are learning to ride and its too much bike). The Dynas and the Softails sit pretty much the same. Being your tall, a low bike like a deluxe or a slim sit too low. My .02, check out a Fatboy, Heritage, Softail Custom, any Dyna (I think you'd like a wide glide because of factory forward controls). All in for a good bike with completed maint (whether you do it or its done) will be 6 to 7k.

Williams HD has some good used stock right now

If you have no experience riding, I suggest looking “short term” for a motorcycle. Something comfortable for a couple years. Once you get some mileage, then it’ll be easier to know what kind of bike you want and what is comfortable.

OP; Define "new rider." Have you completed any rider training course, or spent time behind the handlebars at all?

Just curious but have you ever thought about going to your local HD, sitting on a few of the larger bikes and seeing which one looked/felt the best to you?

Welcome and go to your local HD dealer and sit on the bikes that peak your interest. Good luck.

There are a few companies that will re-do the factory seat, of which will give you the additional room you might need.

I am 6'2" and at my heaviest, I was 300 pounds. I have been very comfortable on my Softails and my Touring Bikes. I have never had a problem stretching out on my Fatboy or Street Glides, however, I might add that the stock seat on an Ultra tends to push me up on the tank, farther forward that I prefer.

As I tell every new rider, don't start on a Harley. Stats say you're going to wreck at least once in your time. Find a used bike that fits you, a V-star for example. Get experienced, save your money, when you're confident buy THE HD that's right for you.
