JohnT;

it looks like you have touched a few nerves with your
post!

The truth does have that effect on some people.. LOL"

I still say your post is the best I've ever seen about
Harley Davidson's..

I went back and read through this thread again....don't really know why I care that much....but I was at first in disagreement with JohnT, and now I see what he's saying. He said "there will always be someone to pay the price for that status symbol no matter what it sounds like". I TOTALLY agree with that. However, I'm just not one of those people. I ride for the pleasure of riding...I love it dearly, I could care less about status. To me, if you take the sound from a Harley, you have an overpriced bike. I know I may be alone here, but I truly believe that people pay for that sound....it's thier justification for buying Harley instead of Honda or Yamaha.
I'm with you on this. That's one of the reasons I started the poll. I ride for the pleasure of riding. The talk of "status symbol" and "image" really ticks me off. Those are the reasons I was turned off to Harley for years.

Bought a Harley because it was a Harley, not because of the pipes on it.
ditto.

For those who think that a Harley-Davidson would no longer be cool without pipes.....When you think about it, it's kind of sad that it'd take a set of $600.00 pipes to essentially 'make' a $20,000.00+ motorcycle in your mind's eye. For those of that mindset (that a Harley-Davidson would cease in being cool without pipes), what does that say about the actual bike itself (sans the pipes)? I mean, if a $600.00 set of pipes 'makes' the bike, what does that say about the other $19,400.00+ worth of machinery?

A Harley doesn't make the man and pipes don't make the bike. I get the sound and the respect that I appreciate with my stock pipes.

I still have stock pipes on my '04. I will change them out I think. I want the "deeper" sound (not necessarily louder). But I don't mind stock pipes and there are a few other alterations I want to do first (new handlebars is next). I don't care that much about the pipe debate. My bike moves, that's what's important.

I love a deep rumble for sure. But I could live with stock pipes on a new Harley if I had no choice.

I think the love for the Harley rumble goes way beyond recent years. Ask anyone how they would feel about an old shovel for example with tame pipes and I bet the majority of people familiar with those bikes would say no-way, no-how to today’s stock pipes.

Nowadays it’s counter-balanced, rubber mounted, low vibration, EFI... They’re the nicest bikes out there for sure and far more reliable then ever before but personally I’m drawn to the days gone by and a nice rumble in the pipes is reminiscent of those times.

First, TO EACH THEIR OWN :-) Let's not be critical of other riders, it's a free country.

Recently Denver city council passed a very unintelligent law stating fines unless you had an EPA stamp on your pipes. Many other towns are drafting simular laws in Colorado. So many people here are trying to get quiet pipes (quite a few harley owning cops included). That' a topic all by itself.

The best thing about Harleys is the ability to personalize in looks, sound and performance. For me, pipes are about performance, not sound. Loud pipes that ruin hp (lots of drag pipes fit this category) are useless to me. My cycleshack pipes will be for the performance boost, if they sound like a thousand screen doors slamming they'll probably come off.

HAPPY RIDING

That's the other word I forgot - respect. "status symbol", "image", "respect" . . come on . . is that why we ride a motorcycle?
