Default How fast does gas go bad / when does oxidation start?

The weather was great here back on March 4, so I took both bikes out for a ride, my first since I stored them for the winter with full tanks with Sta-Bil in them. I thought for sure Spring was here, so I didn’t bother topping the tanks off with gas. But the weather has been garbage, and I haven’t ridden since then.

I maybe used 1/4 a tank of gas in both bikes. Since I put in Sta-Bil, the gas should still be ok, correct? And is having a 1/4-1/2 tank of gas for over 30 days enough to keep any rust away?

With the Sta-Bil you should be good for at least 60 days depending on the Temp and Humidity in your area. You might want to look at the Marine grade Sta-Bil.

I finally got the bike out for a ride last Saturday. The gas in the tank was 90+ days old. Started right up, ran great, like always. Shell premium. There you have it.

So go to Walmart, buy a $2 gas can and top off your tank.

I park my bike in Oct and it does not get started again until at least March. I just fill it up and don't use any additives like sta-bil or anything. Just fire it up and ride when the weather clears and have NEVER had a problem.

I used to store my boat for 5 months out of the year with full tanks and Sta-Bil. Never had a problem.

Thanks for the replies.

I understand that everything is fine when tanks are full. I e done that for years with Sta-Bil, and I’ve never had an issue. What I was wondering about is when you have a tank that’s only 1/2-3/4 full with Sta-Bil. How long can that sit before you need to start worrying about oxidation / rust forming?

If it was full before you rode it in March i find it hard to believe it will give you problems. But if I had any concern I would just do as someone else suggested and top it of from a gas can.

You listen to this place it goes bad in a few weeks, reality is I've ran 2 plus year old gas in cars & bikes with no issues.

Rust is oxidation, only occurs when water sits or there's an air gap. Full tanks shouldn't be an problem long term.
