The Green Mountains of Vermont are beautiful and there are lots of nice little side roads to take you off to nowhere.

 

Head up to the Finger Lakes. You can take RT-17 up, or go off on the back roads if you want. Stay in Ithaca, where there is plenty to do at night, and circle Cayuga, Seneca and Keuka Lakesduring the day. Plenty of cool towns, including Watkins Glen, to stop in.

If you like wine, there are wineries all along the routes, with wine tasting each day (careful, it's easy to get drunk). Plenty of beautiful state parks and vistas to see.

Route 6 all the way across the top of PA.It's closer than Skyline Drive for a weekend tripbut,you need more than 2 days to fully enjoy Route 6.

 

Great suggestions from everyone! Most trips I haven't tried before. Looks like there's plenty to keep me busy for the next bunch'a weekends... now if I could just get the work-week to pass a bit faster

New Paltz looks to be the first trip. I used to do the camping thing, but as I get older and bits and pieces get sore for what seems like no reason, I prefer comfy.
