I did the Skyline Drive a few years ago. Absolutely loved it. Started in Front Royal and rode the entire thing in 6 hours. Made allot of stops and explored while I was there. There are a few places to stop and hike down to a waterfall. I believe it cost $10 to ride it and there are gas stops along the way with a restaurant or two as well. Lots of scenic views and you may see some wildlife as well. Keep in mind it can be crowded at times.

Any road ending in gap for it's name is usually worth checking out.

Not sure where in NYS you are but if you travel much you have to be sick of 81!!! On that Ashville trip, with my son, we stayed on 88 in NY to Pennsylvania 220 south- nice road and it either meets up with 81 somewhere near harrisburgh or you can Googlemap your way east to 81 somewhere...nice alternative. Mostly a 2 lane road through some nice little burgs. I think we had lunch day one in Tagahanick (sp) cool local restaraunt with a model train running around the wall!

Actually, most will easily let you make custom routes.

Some allow you to export to file formats supported by offline GPS apps like CoPilot, Sygic, and Navigon. Also some export to Harley Davidson .gpx. Saw one or two that can connect to Garmin and other devices directly via USB.

Another one...

Rented a 3 room cabin in Maggie Valley last September for a week. Road BRP from Little Switzerland all the way to Cherokee and then beyond to Smokey Mountain National park, Cherohala Skyway, Tail of the Dragon and others.

Its all good in those areas!!!

For sure. That would basically be any road not ending in 'Ridge'.

Getting in for info as well. I'm doing this ride this summer coming from Iowa. Anyone have any input on if it's better to start north and head south or vice-versa? I'm looking at either starting with cherohala and deals gap, and going north, or starting near romney,WV and heading south. It's about the same distance to both from where I'm at.

Also, I'm brining along a sleeping bag, tent, and air matress. Is there decent camping on BRP and everything? Mainly I'm doing this not for the thrill but to save some money on hotels for a 10 day road trip.

I can only think of 2 places for camping. First is about mile marker 200, US 52 at Fancy Gap, Va. Second is mile marker 248, Rt 8 at Laurel Springs, NC. Right past 2 biker bar restaurants mentioned before, Freebournes and The Stations Inn.

Excellent info, thanks all... I'm planning a run down myself. Did it a few times back in the 80s and 90s but different routes would be good.
